In this post I fish four 400 cm tenkara rods. I fish for one hour and compare their on-the-water performance, and which I prefer. I use the same line and fly on each rod. Rods used: TenkaraBum 40, Nissin Oni Honryu 395, Tanuki XL-1, and Oni Type-I. Below are listed my more detailed reviews:

Tom: I love the wading staff you made. I copied your design and made four for myself and friends. On mine I keep experimenting and have used an idea I got from Tom Silva of "This Old House" that he uses on his wood hammer handle.. I take a 3/8" drill and drill some dimples into the top of the wading staff about a foot down from the T so that it provides me with a solid grip without the material.
Thanks again ..Steve

Nice to see a couple of exciting, splashy surface takes...

Great video. I'm in the market for a new 400 cm rod, and this was helpful in giving me a few more data points. Thanks Tom!

Hi Tom, great clip ! Are u fishing a dry fly, letting it float or are u nymphing ?

Kind of an off topic question but I was wondering what type of leg gaiters you were wearing. I noticed a quick shot of them while you were releasing one of your catches.

Tom, I've enjoyed your videos but I would just like to see your casts and casting from a little further off. There are a number of subtleties which are currently lost: your casting stroke, how the rod flexes and responds, and so forth.

Here's an alternative method of camera setup offering a possibly better third person perspective (no I'm not sponsored).
