bin/magento deploy:mode:set developer
or
bin/magento cache:disable block_html full_page
Then you don't need to remember to clear the cache after making the changes.
Just remember to turn them back on or put back in production mode when done. (Better to use a development/staging server and a live server.)

Finally a useful Magento 2 tutorial. Beginning to think they didn't exist! Can anyone point me in the direction of how to modify header content? That's a task which i can't seem to find clear and detailed instruction on. Thanks

This was an amazing tutorial. I've struggled for so long with these basic concepts, but you've cleared them up for me really well.

I've actually been working on the products page today where I added a "New" label on items that fall between a certain date range. On the pages that list multiple products, I extended list.phtml template to the catalog module in my theme, and added a function call from my module to it. However on the single item page, it's been more challenging to put the label on the image in the single product view. Perhaps I'll create a block like you've created here.
