"Take Your Time (Do It Right)" was the perfect song to dance to, a little funky, soulful and anthemic with that xylophone that reminded me of a marching band celebrating a win.

On June 28, 1980, The SOS Band held down the pinnacle of the R&B chart for five weeks, then four weeks at the top of the disco chart and peaked at #3 for two weeks on the Hot100 blocked by Olivia Newton John's "Magic" at #1, and at #2 Christopher Cross's "Sailing".

For Sigidi Abdullah, it was a sweet victory to make his dream come true. At the age of 16, he dreamt he was in a recording studio behind the board working with a string section with a music score in front of him. During the recording of "Take Your Time" he looked around and realized that he had attained his dream.

Born in Chicago and moving to LA when he was nine, he developed an interest in recorded music and read the credits to each and every one of them to acquaint himself. He joined a vocal group and recorded a wine commercial produced by Warren Zevon then worked the producer of the hit group The Fifth Dimension producer Bones Howe.

He got hired as a copyist who wrote lead sheets for Motown and Almo/Irving Music and met Clarence Avant, CEO of Tabu records, home of Brainstorm's 1977 disco classic "Lovin' Is Really My Game". It was Avant who put him producing a group named Santa Monica. Halfway through the sessions, Sigidi asked the keyboardist Jason Bryan why Santa Monica, to which he replied that he once played a gig in that city.

Sigidi went for a walk to contemplate a new name and remembered a song he had recorded called "News" that incorporated Morse code. The first song on the album is SOS and the lyrics explain it means Sounds Of Success. Vocalist Mary Davis unique voice got 70% of the song finished that day as writer Sigidi had not yet written a second verse.

When it came time to finish the song, he tried to do the entire song over again, but realized the first take could not be topped and edited the second verse vocals into the song.

The result was an across the board smash.

1980, what a great time when this was released. The SOS band definitely produced hit after hit during the disco era. A unprecedented time when songs such as this permeated the local AM/FM stations all over this country. Even over seas, this song played extensively in Europe, Australia, and various western nations. Thank you Disco Cat, for presenting this song to be enjoyed and appreciated.
