Ennui, representing boredom, spends most of her time glued to her phone, often ignoring the chaos around her. This limited role made Ennui feel like an unnecessary addition, as she didn't contribute much to the story. Interestingly, Ennui can control the headquarters' console via an app on her phone, highlighting her potential importance. Many viewers felt Ennui could have been more integral to the plot. For example, if Ennui had sided with Joy and the others from the start to challenge Anxiety, it would have allowed her character to stand out and provided more depth to the new emotions introduced in the sequel. A potential Inside Out 3 could redeem Ennui by giving her a more significant role, similar to how the latest movie expanded on Fear, Anger, and Disgust's dynamics with Joy.

Ennui is the boredom emotion, of course she’ll be an antisocial, a phone addicted and a carefree character. Plus she’s not being helpful to anyone because she’s the embodiment of boredom, she’s just so done with everything like a bored one and doesn’t care about anything like it should be. Basically stop calling her useless before looking at the whole picture.

I feel like Ennui wouldn’t do much just by design. Boredom is a pretty sedentary emotion, so it would make sense that anytime something significant was happening to Riley, she would be engaged in whatever it is, and would have no need for boredom. Since we’re watching a movie, they’re obviously not going to show a awful lot of dull moments for Riley or the movie would be boring, so it makes sense that Ennui doesn’t get an awful lot of screen time.
