Why is language important? What place does language hold in the human existence: collectively and individually? How does the human brain process language? And what happens if a person loses language as a result of stroke or brain injury? This is a narrative look at the landscape of language, all the way from eloquence to aphasia. Arshia Qasim is a neuro-rehabilitation physician who has explored the neuroscience of creativity, and how artistic expression can help bridge the gaps in communication and prove therapeutic in a variety of neurological conditions including aphasia. Founder of the NeuroArt Faculty at Alhamra Art Centre Bernardsville in New Jersey, she holds an MRCP and MSc in Clinical Neurology from the University of London and has also taught at Purdue University.

wow! Truly inspirational. I came across this ted talk as my mother had a stroke two months ago and she now has Aphasia, my hero and my everything can't say a word and all am doing is researching to see if there is a light at the end of this painful dark tunnel. Thank you so much for sharing your journey it gives hope to those who are literally at the lowest point of their life and they feel so little and powerless and all they want is to help thier loved ones in anyway and form, . Thank you again.

Dr. Arshia and Barkaat, THANK YOU so much for this presentation. Incredibly informative and inspiring. I have a family member that has aphasia following a massive stroke. What can be achieved despite all that's been lost - It's a matter of responsibility! Wow. "What makes a difference is what response you give with the ability you have" So beautifully stated and TRUE! This is so beautiful Dr. Arshia. You and Barkaat give me hope.

How I wish I could have been part of a Q&A!! I want to know, does aphasia also affect other modes of thought? Does it affect the ability to do maths? Drawing? Music? The ability to speak any language, if one has many? What about sign language -- could a person point to the words/signs one wants to use?
