Great introduction of Japanese history. But, please be careful about the pronunciations of the words. They make a big difference. Heian (平安), Edo (江戸), Ieyasu (家康), and Shogun (将軍) are all wrongly pronounced.

Please don't take this to be rude, I really just want to help. I'm so sorry to be the bearer of bad news. My friend directed me to this because they weren't sure about something. But, the word Heian was mispronounced.

平安時代 (Heian Jidai), or Heian itself へいあん consists of 5 hiragana. They should be pronounced as follows.

HE - "Hey!" as in the greeting or "Hay"
I - This should be pronounced like the 'e' in "Egret"
A - "A" Is similar to the 'a' in "Slovakia"
N - Just a plain 'N'. Same as you'd use it in "No" or "Nitrogen"

The 'i' is almost silent, with emphasis on the "He" and "An".

(P.S. 平安 (Heian) shares a character with 平成 (Hesei), the current 'era')

But Daimyo weren't around until the Ashikaga Shogunate and really took root during the Sengoku period. During the Kamakura period the land was controlled by Shugo and Jito.
