Power Winders - Are They Worth It?

---- GET SOME FILM -----

--------------------------------
Why get a power winder for your camera and what do they do? This quick video gives an overview. Sometimes considered an external battery grip, power booster, power winder....they add ergonomics to your camera, faster shooting capabilities and auto wind or rewind for some of the models.

We give a strong recommendation as an added accessory if you are a high-volume shooter. Plus they look pretty great.

What are your thoughts? Would you use one? Why or why not?

Holy shit. The canon ae1 with the auto winder is, apparently, the origin of the stock "camera shutter" sound

Motor drives make your film camera sound more like "$ha-ching..$ha-ching $ha-ching $ha-ching!"

Just inherited my mothers Pentax ME and there was a Pentax ME Winder II in the cameras bag. Can't wait to put some film through it!

Wow, that cannon sound is the most stereotypical camera sound I’ve ever heard.

I got a winder for my A1 for 3 reasons. 1) it adds way more gripping area which helps in manipulating the camera for weird angles. 2) it sounds awesome. 3) with the winder, 70-210 lens and an eyecup, the camera is basically the in game camera from GTA SA which is pretty cool

Love my Nikon F4 with the MB-21 winder. Heavy as hell but it is great and surprisingly easy to handle in spite of the weight.

They are indeed. Thanks so much for featuring your update. Much appreciated.

I doubt very many people want to burn through film at 2+ frames per second these days, however, I prefer large, heavy cameras and will often use a winder (set to advance the film one frame at a time) to increase the size, weight, and balance.

The only 35mm film camera that feels right (and not like a toy) to me, without a winder is the Nikon F3.

The EOS 1N is really underrated. An absolute bargain to buy too.

I use a Power winder on my Canon AL-1 to keep the battery door closed.

1:29 For the Canon winder, it's actually 2 frames a second.

A motordrive makes the camera bigger, bigger = better. The best tool for the job is always the biggest tool for the job.

Interesting, The F3 is probably the least comfortable of the motordrives that I have used. Canon nailed it with the MA for the A1 and the AE1 P.

If you use a stabilized zoom lens on a "modern" camera like the Canon EOS 1 V/N or 3, you'd notice your expensive battery will drain quickly (also true for Nikons and others). because the stabilizer needs a lot of electricity to work. Same for the autofocus motor of heavy lenses like a 50mm 1.2. With a battery grip your batteries will not only last longer, but you can also use rechargeable batteries, saving you a lot of money!

It weights a lot, when I got my Nikon FM the grip was sulfated so it was easier to me to just throw it in the thrash haha

In the past, OK. Nowadays, if I think a fast sequence will be required, I use digital, which doesn't have a heavy winder. For analogue, a waste of expensive film, extra size, and especially a lot of extra weight. A nice gadget or tool once, but no more now.
