I think the problem is that the salt though minimal at first tends to build up in the plant growing medium over time; building to a critical level where nutrients become locked out to the plant

No it's not. Your ignorant. I killed a 50 by 50 garden 2 years in ah row until I found thee outside spiket was hook directly to my softener. Now I have 4lb tomatoes

WRONG. KILLED EVEN MY MINT PLANTS. Didn’t know I was using the wrong spigot. Lots of my garden was failing. Called the softener installer, then I got the correct information. Use the new spigot, not the old one.
