Used to describe a trait or characteristic. Ser is more permanent.

Soy americana
(I am American)

El taxi es bonito
(The taxi is pretty)

Estar:
Used to describe a emotion or state, or location. Temporary

Estoy cansada
(I'm tired)

El hotel está aquí
(The hotel is here)
