Fourth Wave Of Feminism

Показать описание
The fourth wave of feminism started around 2012 and focused on sexual harassment, body shaming, rape and various other issues.
One of the main objective of the movement is to use social media to address these issues. It is trans-inclusive, sex-positive, body-positive and digitally driven.
The convergence of technology and physical reality has revolutionized the economic, social, and political spheres in the world. In theory, the technology created by the digital revolution provides policymakers with an opportunity to create a more inclusive future.
The wave rose amidst various incidents. The first incident was in India, where a young woman was gang-raped, sparking protests and international outrage over the incident across social platforms. This was followed by various other incidents.
#Happytobleed
The hashtag “Happy to bleed” started after a head priest at a Hindu temple said that he would allow women to enter the temple only if he had a machine to check whether women are menstruating or not.
This news created a stir in social media and Nikita Azad started a #happytobleed campaign across the digital platform to protest against these remarks.
#Metoo movement
In 2017, two journalists, Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey, published an article that detailed how Harvey Weinstein, a famous Hollywood film producer, had raped and sexually assaulted several women over the span of 20 years. After the story was published, several women including top actress from Hollywood recounted their own stories of harassment against Harvey Weinstein.
This further led to women all across the world recounting their own stories of sexual harassment and assault in public and private spaces under the hashtag metoo.
The metoo hashtag was initiated by Tarana Burke in 2006 and made popular by Alyssa Milano, Hollywood actor who while writing about her own ordeal encouraged women to use the hashtag me too if they have ever been sexually harassed and assaulted.
Within months, it grew into a large movement that exposed dozens of powerful men in politics, business, entertainment, and the media across the world.
Some major outcomes have been:
Discussion about various subjects previously tabooed like periods and sex are being normalised.
Provided space for discussion about women’s experiences
These discussions are transferred to a much larger audience through digital platforms
Few major concerns are that
women and girls from rural areas especially in countries from global south are continued to be excluded
the online harassment and toxicity mostly goes unchecked
