Why I picked the M4 iMac over the Mac mini

I have been a fan of the iMac since the original one, and for the better part of my computing lifestyle, I have always used an iMac up until a few years ago where I replaced that setup for a MacBook Pro with a studio display... so why am I going back to the iMac, and why do I still use it when there are more powerful computers out there?

Wish they would just add HDMI port, and let us use it as.a straight Monitor display when the things get outdated.

I got an M1 iMac a couple weeks ago as a birthday present/family computer and it's wild how much use we are getting out of it. You really nailed how it has this sort of draw to it that makes you want to sit down at it and get things done. My wife just spent the day working from home on it and said she can't believe how we've gone so long without one. We might have to get another for a separate room.

I purchased my wife a display three years ago so she can hook her M1 Max MacBook Pro to it. She rarely uses it. Then I purchased an iMac and she absolutely loves it and uses it every day. She loves the minimalist design of the iMac and the convenience. Once you get used to it, it’s so much more convenient than an MBP + external display.

My biggest problem with all in one computers is they aren't upgradeable. When your iMac needs replacing, so does your monitor, even though it should last for at least two or three computers.

I feel you Greg. If Apple made a 27 or 32” iMac I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Any Mac is a Mac.
There's one for every use case, and you know it's going to be great.
The iMac has always been the ideal home and business computer.

If iMac had a bigger screen and worked as an external monitor, I would get one in a heartbeat.

My iMac life story is almost identical to yours and everything you said is 100% right! My yellow M3 iMac is at my family’s century-old three-season cottage... it’s ideal for my family use case and I absolutely love it. I’ve often said that iMac’s have a “soul” like no other piece of technology.

Just upgraded my M1 Mac mini to a M4 iMac and I'm loving it. After many years of using MacBooks, I'm finally convicted that a fixed desktop setup is for me. What helped bridge that gap was owning a good iPad. I realized that much of the "mobile" computing I did could be accomplished on the iPad, and for much of the productivity work I preferred a desk with a larger monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc... Now my mobile environment is extremely portable and my desktop environment is always setup and ready to go.

I really wish Apple would bring back Target Display Mode on the new iMacs. They market these computers to families, dorm dwellers, people who want a bedroom or kitchen computer, people in small apartments, etc. But generally we tend to want to maximize our screens and connect multiple things to them, especially in those circumstances. As an all-in-one the iMac occupies space that might be better served by a more flexible display. Giving it an AV input would make it a much more flexible and usable device.

It's aesthetically pleasing for sure. I'm drawn to aesthetics.

I have no idea where I would put an iMac, but I love the look.

Great video my friend. Only two weeks ago, I ordered my wife her first iMac - 24" (same colour as yours - the green!) Mate, she LOVES it. :-) - We ended uping her storage to 512gb. She's just a normal user, web browsing, youtube, word, etc.

She loves the clarity of the screen and says it's the best computer ever!

Right at the end of your video. Definitely don't hate you mate. Your delivery is friendly and content appropriate for the masses. Keep being brilliant Greg!

Hey Greg, thanks for this SUPER video. I love how you mix the usefulness of the iMac with the nostalgia and "sense of joy" it can deliver. While my current lil' buddy is (still) a 2020 MacBook Pro, I know that some day it will need to be replaced. And I also know that the "sense of joy" it carries will pass along to its successor, just like happened with the ones which preceded it. Sheesh, so philosophical. But I think you know what I mean. Hey, I am still relatively new to your YT channel, but I love your work and, even more, the fun personality you bring to us. Take care, OK?

Every time I check what I could get instead of an iMac, the options are either more expensive or worse — sometimes both! And that’s before we even get to the beautiful design and colors that no computer seems to match.

I'm on my iMac M3 right now. Gonna use it until it's unsupported which will be about 6 to 7 years more time.

If you want Retina display this is good value. It’s way cheaper than studio display plus Mac mini.

Almost went for it but since I already a 24 inch monitor and peripherals, it was hard to justify over the 799 $ CA price tag of the Mini. But that green man!

I totally get your PoV. The best tool you have is the one you actually use, and if that's an iMac, then that's the best tool. I use an intel iMac every day. When I bought it, it was a toss up between a Mini and the iMac. Made a pros and cons list, the Mini came out ahead, so I bought the iMac! There's just something magical about it. The computer part has entirely disappeared so you're free to just get on with what you want to do. Too much is made of the CPU speed or the RAM amount or the upgradability or whatever, when the important part for most of us is to get the computer part out of the way and let us get on with creating stuff! iMac does that perfectly, which is why it's still popular and a useful tool.
