In my opinion they both have brilliant backhands and Federer's is one of the best too but I think Gasquet has the best single handed backhand on the tour and i'm happy that his suspension has now been lifted and he is back on the tour again :)

I've been learning from a young age, just struggling with my one handed backhand. I slice every backhand in a match because I have no confidence in it.

@TennisAnnalyst i'm not talking about the further away from your body you strike the ball the harder you hit it. i'm talking about the length of the swing. the take back with a single hander is greater as is the follow through. This means that more power is put into the swing from the rotation of the whole body. More momentum is imparted to the ball because a greater mass of your body is moving.

@RasArth i was 17 when i changed from a double to a single. if you play with it for a month or two you'll find you're hitting it fairly naturally. you'll also find you can get as much if not more power from it because the length of the swing is increased. i'd say stick with it but i'm really biased towards hte single hander now cos i think it looks much nicer.

my absolute best backhand I can hit is meerly his "messing around" backhand

I hit backhands like this, could never get the grip of a two handed backhand.

@TheMattSkellz i think what he may mean is federer seems very relaxed in practice...and generally its true federer plays with very little intensity in practice...just compare one of those backhands with a backhand winner he hits in a grand slam...very different...

but that is *probably* one of his secrets to success. he never over works his body outside grand slam and thats probably why hes gotten to so many semi finals and finals of grandslams...and many of them consecutively...

Federer may not be number 1 in the world rankings but he will always be number 1 everywhere else. Thumbs up if you agree

@kverheij ur absolutely wrong, federers backhand is just as good as his forehand. its held in high esteem in the tennis world.

@TennisAnnalyst i don't really understand what you're saying. The further away from the axis of rotation that you strike the ball, the less power you will get. so from that respect it is easier to generate power from teh two hander because it is closer to your body and you're using two arms. However the length of hte swing of the single hander is so much longer and the rotation of your whole upper body is so much more that this allows you to put more power into the shot.

Federer hitting a two-handed backhand is awesome! Because I always wanted to play like Roger and now that I have finally started playing tennis, I suck at the one-handed backhand =/

@Andyc18 there are other guy´s, who have great one hander´s as well, just as good, if not better, than gasquet..that would be phillip kohlschreiber, stanislas wawrinka<-which in my opinion has the best one handed top spin backhand on tour..

I'd think everyone here criticising federer's backhand can only dream with having a backhand as good as his "relaxed practice backhand". I bet none of us could in a hundred years put that ball back in play, with it's spin, speed and weight.
If any of you can do it, don't bother coming here to reply, just go on to your countries tennis association and tell someone "I wanna play tennis professionally, I can hit a better BH than Federer". If you do post a video of it in the tube so we can laugh..

@dontclicktheusername Federer use matches for practice and practices for relaxation. He does what he does in the video when we are taking a dump, watch TV or play video games.

@Ceetjuh00 True. Power comes after control, not before.

I know he's using a flat backhand i've seen him do a slice backhand it's just like you said didn't use any spin at all in this video

even the best players in the world have to practice. But the practice hours between matches never take very long or are as hard as pretournament practices. But yeah, it's great to see that he doesn't try :P
