5:49 "Mole" refers to ~6.02 X 10^23 "particles" of a substance ("Avogado's Number"), which can be atoms, molecules, electrons, etc. Traditionally, it meant gram-moles, ie, the atomic/molecular weight, etc, in grams. In the 1960s, with the adoption of the SI, the g-mole was "officially" designated the "mol" (no "e"), and that's the unit employed by chemists in the lab. Chemical engineers also use kg-moles & lb-moles, because of the huge quantities of chemicals we often deal with.

Maybe this is how chemistry is taught now at the high school level, but something makes me doubt this. Nothing about the mole until pg. 299 is a little worrisome. I think when I took high school chemistry, we learned about moles in the first month of the year. This book, while it certainly contains some basic chemistry concepts, looks insufficient to me as a professional chemist.
