I worked at McDonnell Douglas for many years. Whenever we do an engine run test, there is a large cage acting as a wall with wheels which is positioned in front of the engine to be tested. If a person manages to get too close to the cage, the cage will prevent him from being sucked into the engine. Then again the force of the engine's vacuum intake would be so strong the person would be pinned helplessly on the cage until they turned off the engine.

I was 17. A DC-4 had just landed on our arctic airstrip, a mining camp.
I was a radio operator and weather observer.
Whenever a plane landed most of the 25 men at the camp would head down to the strip to see what was coming in.
The pilot shut down 3 engines and left #1 running to ensure enough battery power to restart and head back to Montreal.
I was under the plane near the freight door and started walking toward the front oblivious to the rotating prop.
When I was less than a foot away from the prop I froze and realized that it was just inches away from my head.
I later became a commercial pilot and had my license for more than 50 years. To this day I can relive every moment of almost walking into a spinning propeller.

Jesus that's terrifying imagine Ur last moments as the last thing you see is the fast-moving blade fans of the engines. I love the way you tell the story! Ur channel needs more attention!

I can tell you from working in the industry as an Aircraft Technician at a major airline for 24 years, you're never allowed to operate an engine higher than idle power while parked at a gate. There might have been different rules at this airport and time, but that would be surprising to me.

On a happier note, there was a video a couple of years ago - don't know if it's still available - that showed a guy actually get sucked into a jet engine - but he survived because his clothing got caught on some framework inside the engine cowl and kept him from getting sucked all the way in. A ground crew member is seen making the Cut Engine sign to the pilot, so it was shut down quickly.

Yeah seriously how can you do an autopsy on what is essentially a pile of hamburger?

When you've got an aircraft engine sucking in about 90 tonnes + of air every second on idle & able to ingest anything up to 2.8mtrs away, it's a lethal situation regardless

I was flying an MD-80 as the captain when we arrived in El Paso. We taxied past that aircraft and witnessed all the aftermath. Not pretty. Obviously, there wasn't enough training to stay well clear of a jet engine's intake while running, or they knew but were in a hurry, which is not uncommon due to pressure to get the flight departed.

How aweful...can't imagine the final thoughts of those folks

Somebody needs to teach these automated narrators that the airplane isn't called a "seven hundred and forty seven."

I saw this happen ONCE at HATFIELD, freak accident, a gust of air inflated the white paper protection suit the engineer was wearing, the suction of the running engine got hold of him, and in he went, the engine was shut down and his legs just above the knees were all that was left of him, THIS is why UK AIRCRAFT HAVE FCKIN GREAT YELLOW CAGES AROUND THE ENGINE WHEN THEY ARE DOING GROUND RUNS, the engine was buried with the remains of the engineer.

This type of incident serves as a reminder that all of our lives are hanging by the slenderest of threads. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes the smallest of mistakes by yourself or someone else in order to sever that thread. RIP to the victim.

Fun fact this plane still flies for Air Peace today under a different registration after it was sold
