I don't use them for this very reason. Someone once told me that they were full of bacteria after the first use so I stopped using them.

I put mine seconds at a time through the microwave when it's wet. Works like a charm.

I don’t use a sponge. I have a scrub brush and a scrubby pad. My in-laws have a stash of sponges somewhere under the sink, so when they leave the sponge just goes in the trash (I don’t complain because my MIL is an amazing helper wrt cleaning up after meals, so I’m willing to put up with the sponge in the sink for a few days)
