Not "strange"! The young male hyena is showing submissive behaviour (cowering, grinning, yelping) towards the adults and comes to greet them. Hyenas greet and affirm each other by sniffing each other's (usually erect) genitals, lifting their hind leg in return. They're all relaxed, practising their typical bonding rituals!

I know hyenas are not canids, are in a family of their own, and are more related to cats and mongooses but here's what it is. Crocuta, which is both the spotted hyena's genus and species, was the German Orientalist Hiob Ludolf's name for it while its species name is a throwback to its first scientific name Canis crocuta. Can you believe that?

"Strange behaviour"? This all just seems like typical hyena behaviour to me... submiting, teasing, vocalizations, lazy, cute... normal hyenas
