Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) Greeting Ceremony

The unique greeting ceremony of the spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta) features mutual examination, sniffing and licking of the genital area and extended phallus or pseudopenis. The animals stand head to tail and lift a back leg balancing for up to a minute. The purpose of this ceremony is to maintain bonds in the hyena clan.
Cubs as young as four weeks are able to extend penises and engage in this ceremony.
