Pirlo at 34 years old took a 7th placed Juventus team and made them won the league, with Vucinic, Matri and Pepe upfront. He was unplayable. He can be in the conversation with anyone, even Xavi himself always said he is a fan of him.

Respectfully, Pirlo was instrumental when Italy won the World Cup during a very powerful and difficult era in international football. He was also arguably the best player at Euro 2012... he sat on the same table as Xavi and Iniesta that tournament. Modric's international career is quite overrated. Croatia didn't achieve much in Euro 2012 or World Cup 2014... Euro 2016, they had a solid chance to eliminate Portugal and completely capitulated. Modric was really poor in the 2018 World Cup during a number of matches, particularly against Russia... he was absolutely terrible and was very lucky to score his penalty in the shootout.

International football legacy is something I take into huge consideration, and this Croatian generation had a lot of potential.

To say Pirlo doesn't get into the conversation is short-sighted and disrespectful. Modric at club level... yes, mostly magnificent... but he never redefined his style like Pirlo did in the 2010s. It's a conversation we should all be happy to have because Pirlo brought joy to so many matches.

Rio is still hurt with that Euro loss to Pirlo. I think he is the Only Midfielder I saw changed the whole shape and style of a game in just a few minutes of course next to Zidane and Iniesta.
Take that Euro game vs England, games on World Cup 2006, Champions league 2007 when they take a revenge on Liverpool for the 2005 loss....etc
By the way this is coming from a Modric fan (I like the Croatian team and wished Modric to win this World cup before he retires as i thought this is the best Chance they have).

i don't think Xavi or Iniesta come close to Pirlo's importance to his team
Both spanishmen were part of a gigantic Barcelona oiled machine, both of them spectacular workhorses
But Pirlo was levels above that, he was almost his entire team, even when standing still on the field at 36 yo he directed his entire team and every touch in the ball was pure magic

Pirlo is the first CDM in his mid 30's to 'Try' and be man marked out of a game by opposing managers. Correct answer, Pirlo and Modric same team with a destroyer type in a 3 man midfield with them

Pirlo was man of the match in a World Cup final and a World Cup semi final. Won everything in the game. Comfortably better than Modric and the one dimensional Xavi
