How To Make Soil For A Vegetable Garden

Essentially we are re creating a sandy loam soil here. I detail this blend in my book Kitchen Garden Revival.

Every other soil bag I checked at @homedepot had peat and I really try to avoid peat and vermiculite when I can.

Plus the cost of these three bags together equals less than one of the pre made soil mixes.

This year I mixed top soil, compost bag, peat moss, and shredded leaves. Tossed in a little bit of fertilizer and mixed it all up. Seems to have done well for me this year.

I was looking in to doing this as well, same combo. But different brands in my local Depot in Ca. Hope it works. Made my own screen too to get rid of sticks.

I take my fall leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps, and yard waste. Toss it into a pile, sprinkle in some blood meal.😅 Then let it sit in the yard till early May, when I sift it through 2, 1/4 inch screens. Works great anywhere I use it. Beds, pots, top dressing, even mulch.

Dont use paver sand only use horticulture sharp sand in your mix

i have basically all clay soil. It’s insane. I live in hayward hills in CA. Somehow things manage to grow like a small lemon tree, wild onions, succulents even, some perennials. But I want to fix it. Some say to add sand and manure, some say compost and manure, some say garden soil and manure. WHAT SHOULD I DO
