5 kHz is a sweet spot for our ears when it comes to sensing how close or far a sound is in a mix. Boosting it can make something feel closer, while cutting can push it back. It’s like the magic depth control range.

Vocals are sitting in 3k-6k mainly so yes. As a mixing engineer I usually enhance the vocals with the pultec at 5k. It’s usually getting to the point where is shouldn’t be boosted anymore in mastering. So yeah it depends on the track.

Honestly since I started listening to you a year ago...just wow - my hearing's improved, and my appreciation for tiny moves has gone way up. Thank you!

yup I already do this I boost around that area so you can feel the presence of the mid range in the vocal it works most the time. I love this trick

Funnily enough, I read a book about Sam Phillips (Sun Records, Elvis, Johnny Cash etc.) and he said he always boosts a little around 5K for some extra sauce!

There’s so much rhetoric on why boosting is “bad” and you should only be using subtractive EQ which is a reason something like this isn’t common knowledge. Thank you for reinforcing the idea that boosting is not only ok, but also ridiculously effective. 🎉🎉🎉

Use Pultec EQ on that frequency. That makes it sound so sweet.

the only thing about this is that it completely depends on what the vocal take sounds like to begin with. one db of 5k across the board isn't going to do the same thing to everything. of course you're not saying it will, but i think what we should take away from this is that 5k, and the range around it, is a good spot to mess with an EQ in order to bring more presence into the vox.

OK, a vid about +1dB at 5Khz -- maybe we are running out of deeper topics.
