The European Union has approved a Dutch government plan to buy out thousands of farmers.
It is part of a multibillion-dollar drive to cut nitrogen emissions, which are affecting biodiversity in the Netherlands.
But the plan has faced strong opposition from the agricultural sector.

Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from the town of Woudenberg, the Netherlands.

I love that the comments are in support of the farmers! As if big business and governments really care about the environment.

The world can live without politicians. But the world cannot live without farmers.

It’s terrible idea to tell people stop producing in order to reduce emissions. How about they spend money to help these farmers to reduce emissions while keep producing.

Buy outs? Naturally on the taxpayer dime. What a criminal way to use taxpayer money.

That's the way of politicians to get more money. You bought it from the people. But, you get more from the taxes.

It's strange to hear Greenpeace support a good idea like this, but still not support other good ideas, such as nuclear energy.

Imagine telling ppl to suck it up and cope with a lower quality of life, because of vague environmental nonsense and arbitrary standards and caps

It's insane,
