Too Much is Just Right [Animation]

It's 3DCG, so elements often get lost.
The screen is zoomed out, so it lacks impact.
Inbetween-frames get generated automatically, so it feels unlively.

For all these reasons and more, "too much" is "just right"!

The whole beauty of animation in the first place is how much you can exaggerate movement and emotion to create a sense of fluidity in a particular showing

best line of the video "if you think somethings ok, that just means you have room to go even further" the motivation from this 3 minute video.

If he could literally give a two hour lecture for game design majors, i would've taken it in a heartbeat

Realism is a plague in modern games, both for the animation AND artstyle. This video shows exactly why.

Interesting, he's teaching the core basics of:
-Stretch and Squash
-Anticipation
-Exaggeration
- Calculated Key posing
-Appeal.
-The silhouette rule.
But from a game feel standpoint, rather than a professional animator's standpoint. He of course doesn't teach when it should be done and when actually "too much" is not aesthetic, but being able to aknowledge its importance in development is a HUGE step that most game devs usually don't care much about.

People who criticize this or always say "thats so unrealistic" or "that's anatomically impossible", either, aren't artist or they're rookie artists

It's so funny how Kazuya's twisted torso made it into Smash to stay true to the original. I never knew about that before, that's such a funny attention to detail.

Exaggeration is one of the base principles of animation, and I've always been impressed by how well (and how much) it's implemented in the Smash Bros series

It's the 3D equivalent to a 2D animation smear in a cartoon. If you pause on it, it looks weird, but it adds so much to the overall animation.

I've seen too many morons say that any animation which breaks physics or looks bad on any frame is bad animation. I hope this video clears that up for as many people as possible.

Remember, animation is not real life. You can do whatever you want. That's what's great about it. A single frame may look weird, but when grouped with a bunch more and put at a decent speed it looks completely fine and fluid. Never be afraid to experiment as you may come across something that ends up looking amazing. This a paraphrased version of a lecture one of my art professors gave one day.

this is exactly the kind of thing people who don't know a thing about animation complain about. just like people complaining about smear frames in traditional animation. it's only ugly if you pause to inspect it. it wasn't made to be inspected though and looks better than some toned down thing in motion

It’s like they say: “go big or go home”. If you’re gonna do something give it all you’ve got and make it great

If you’ve never seen Ed, Edd n Eddy, it’s such a perfect example of going absolutely overboard on animation, and it’s always extremely funny with it’s visual gags.

I believe animation has a term called "squash and stretch" to convey movement through hyperbolic motions.
Gaming uses animation a lot so using it on its movement is a pretty logical choice.

Always nice to see Virtua Fighter get some love. While I'm not an animator, nearly every lesson I've heard or listened to always encourages exaggeration, as far back as the medium was founded. I grew up with cartoons like Popeye, Disney shorts, and Looney Tunes as a kid, but watching them as an adult gives me a much deeper appreciation for the craft. Games are just as much of a fictional entertainment medium and there's no reason not to take advantage of it.

Animators do this all the time.
Breaking joints and whatnot might look bad in still shots, but they give the final animation impact.
Viewers don't see it, but they can feel when it's not there.

And this... is... to go... even further beyond!

Kazuya becomes malnourished while doing that move.

I remember another game dev YouTuber's analysis of Smash animation talked about how their animations are more exaggerated in order to bring out the uniqueness of each character especially when they are zoomed out and in an 8-player smash.
