Density - Sink and Float for Solids

Watch an overview of Lesson 3.4 featuring an activity that shows that even though a wax candle is heavier than a piece of clay, the wax floats and the clay sinks. The mass of the candle is compared to an equal volume of water to show that the water weighs more than the wax. This shows that the water is more dense than the wax and explains why the wax floats. Molecular model illustrations are used to help students understand why water is more dense than wax. Connections to the NGSS are also highlighted.
