Also, just to clarify whole "memory of the village" thing, that guy is probably no professional historian or anything, but just an old, retired, gossipy man who informally acts as a village historian of sorts. This is not an instutution in any specific way, but the accounts of such people do tend to be useful in uncovering the past of an understudied locale.
