Just buy a Toyota Corolla hatch. That is my answer when anyone asks me what type of car they could by. Just buy this car and then I'll meet your objections. It's too small! It's not AWD. It's Boring! YOU'RE BORING. Show me that you can maintain a regular car and do the required maintenance and then we'll talk about you owning something cool. News flash. This is the coolest car you'll ever own.

For 40 years my parents had FWD cars and RWD pickups. They've lived within 10 miles of the same spot that whole time. Mom got a Jeep Compass for reasons tangentially related to being an SUV and now swears that she needs AWD for the snow. The Compass was FWD. But she doesn't believe me because it was a Jeep.

When it comes to simple transportation, Toyota Corolla is always the answer. It’s just rarely the answer people want.

Mazda 3. You might be able to find one of those. Agree on the snow tires.

In my opinion, the 9th generation Toyota Corolla 2003-2008 (for the US market) is the best commuter car money can buy. It's reasonably quick. Gets good Fuel mileage, is safe and dirt cheap to buy/maintain /repair and modify.

Wait. You get objections to a small, manual, usable, efficient, fun, affordable, every day use car?

The argument against having two sets of wheels & tyres pales in comparison to having to haul a heavy ass 4WD chassis around for most of the year, more expensive maintenance, fuel costs, everything.

Mazda 3, you dogged it a bit for being a “corporate car” but when there’s no dealer markup on them like with toyotas, for a nice and reliable car, with almost as good fuel economy, it’s a pretty good alternative.

Bought my wife a ‘20 Corolla recently, automatic, but still a very nice car and we’re really happy with it

I’m personally a fan of the Subaru Impreza. Not the WRX, just the regular Impreza, for many of the same reasons as the Corolla, but the Impreza has some extra upsides and some extra downsides.
Upsides:
- AWD gives you better traction on poor ground conditions. Combined with snow tires in winter, you can drive on anything with little trouble.
- the low-mounted boxer-4 gives you a low center of gravity that helps the car stay stable under heavy cornering in emergency situations.

Downsides:
- AWD means increased tire wear that rotating the tires can’t really mitigate.
- the Subaru boxer engine is less reliable than the Toyota I4, and the boxer can lose oil over time.

Don‘t buy a Corolla hatch, buy a Corolla station wagon, oh wait you don‘t get that 😅

The Corolla Hatch has a cramped backseat. Not a deal breaker for me, but it can be for others

You can’t go wrong with a Corolla. They’re well-built, reliable cars.

My 2007 honda civic manual coupe (no not the SI) is so much fun to drive in snow storms here in Minnesota. I got a good deal on marketplace for basically brand new tires and steel rims. I run a size up for the side wall thickness to give me just a little lift without running into clearance issues. Anything over 5 inches of snow and I’m plowing snow. I’d be willing to argue that this car is better in the snow than my previous four-wheel-drive. Pick up truck. I drove it home in a snowstorm after the roads already had accumulated almost a foot of snow. I just kept the RPMs high for better control. My AC condenser took a beating from the snow being compacted

I’ve had a 22 hatch for about a year and I love this thing. Still getting used to the cvt (couldn’t find a stick in my area on short notice and I drive in city traffic a lot) but the fuel economy is great, plenty of room for daily driving me and a friend around, dropped the back seats and fit my whole apartment worth of boxes (minus furniture) in one go and that 170hp is plenty enough to be zippy without breaking the law. I recommend it to everyone and my friend bought one just like mine after road tripping with me over the summer.

23 Corolla hatchback is the first car I bought new. 40, 000 miles in and not a single problem.

You can have awd in a hybrid as well if you feel you NEED awd

Tbh Corollas are absolutely fine vehicles and can do almost anything you ask them for cheap

I drove a car for 2 years a little farther north from there with 18 year old tires, a Toyota Corolla can handle just about anything but putting a smile on your face with a few exceptions, but it’ll stay that way for a millennia before the repair bill is over a grand

We lived in the snow for 5 years and only ever had front wheel drive cars. They did fine 95% of the time. We didn't even ever have snow tires, just tires with actual tread.
