In 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar united to form what is now known as the United Republic of Tanzania. Even the name is a combination of the two previous nations' names: "Tan" is derived from "Tanganyika," and "Zan" is derived from "Zanzibar."
In 1953, Egypt and Syria merged to form the United Arab Republic to "save" Syria from becoming a communist state; however, this union was short-lived, lasting only three years. Syria left the union because it felt neglected by the government in Cairo.
In response to the creation of the United Arab Republic, Iraq, and Jordan, whose kings were cousins, joined to form the Arab Federation of Iraq and Jordan in 1958. However, the union ended only six months later when King Faisal II of Iraq was overthrown in a military coup.
And Lastly north and south Vietnam. After the fall of Saigon, which is known today as Ho Chi Minh City, to the North Vietnamese army in April 1975, the country was officially reunified under the leadership of the communist government in Hanoi.
