He rang a bell every time before giving the dogs food. Over time, the dogs started to salivate just at the sound of the bell—even when no food was given. Pavlov’s experiment showed that a neutral sound, like the bell, could trigger a reaction, like salivation, when it was linked with something that naturally caused that reaction, like food. This discovery helped explain how we develop habits through associations, which is key to understanding how humans and animals form certain behaviors.
