A look at eightban. Collectable, playable mini records from 2004. A deliberately, unashamedly low-fi format.

******CORRECTION******
Yes the blue tape is Masking Tape not Gaffers Tape. What an amazing gaff - it's probably going to be on a compilation of the most unbelievable mistakes ever made in an improvised youtube voice-over. Perhaps I should start writing scripts and fact checking them, but no... that's not my style....I'm going to keep freestyling straight from the top of the dome, spitting lyrics straight from my bald patch. Sometimes they're right, sometimes they're wrong...but they are always funky fresh. I'm out of here like last year.

"This will be the only time you've seen anyone play a record in a crosley turntable to make it sound better" I choked on my drink over that remark

I absolutely love the Idea of getting music in random 'booster packs'

Somebody needs to make a new version of this music format. These little records are gorgeous. Great find TM.

The music for ‘Captain Ultra’ was written by the legendary Japanese musician, Tomita (one of his early compositions)

Judy Collins' song "Both Sides Now" is just on a one-sided record? ☹

Warmed me right up during this chilly winter season with that sick Crosley burn.

8ban format is launching again, this Record Store Day, in the US and Japan. 15 titles are available, and Thirdman records is also involved again. Crosley is as well, with the RSD3 Mini Player. Lots of PR and social media buzz about this one!

I feel like this would do well today. Vinyl has made a comeback and people love collecting little stuff like this.

Super cool. I'm really surprised that this was made during such a modern time for music formats. 2004? I mean I can understand if this came out in the 70s or something, but this is nuts. Very fascinating to see that they had an itch for vinyl back in those days when it still wasn't very cool to use.

Those colored records are meant to be replicas of Asahi Sonorama discs put out during the 60's and 70's. They were basically plastic flexi-discs from the looks of it. The added pictures/descriptions are actually storybooks that went along with the record sheets. Wikipedia has a good entry on them....
