I grew up in LA when we had great radio stations. I played to the radio every day. The DJ's would slow down or speed up records, so I had to learn to tune quickly.
KRLA, KKJZ, KMET, and all the others played music all day. I learned blues, rock, jazz and experimental acid music. So now you really can't fool me. I've been there and done that.
Listen and play along. That's how you learn. I played in bands all over LA for 40 years and bass is still the best instrument ever.

If the 1, 4 and 5 are in every song, as you claim, how do you explain the 2 5 1 as being the most popular progression?

Perhaps even more important than the notes you play are the notes you don't play. I believe you've addressed this. It's about the phrasing, the rhythm. No different than how important the spaces between words or sentences are to the story telling. The reader or listener needs the freedom to be engaged. To think.
