Nothing like drifting an aircraft carrier.

I was onboard the USS Nimitz when they performed this maneuver. I was working in my space on a stool with steel feet, on a steel deck. They would announce “heel port” or “heel starboard” and I would slide from one side of my space to the other. It was quite a ride.

The guys driving the ship... turned it into a massive speedboat flippin rings on the sea. That has to be fun for at least one person on the test crew.

RIP to anything not tied down on deck when they do this.

It's like drifting your car in the mall parking lot but instead they're drifting the whole parking lot.

If there was anything on the tables on the mess decks it's on the deck now.

Naval Officer: "Permission to drift sir?"

Captain Picard: " ENGAGE "

Also Picard: “Seize the time... Live now! Make now always the most precious time. Now will never come again.”

There is a guy at the wheel trying to strictly follow orders on the outside, and the little kid inside him is getting to drift a multi billion dollar hot rod and push it to its limits ! A friend told me about being on the Nimitz when the call came in that Libya’s fighters were trying to get missile lock on them in 1981 . Alarms sounded and the flight deck was intense as the carrier went to full emergency power. He was working the weather station and said the wind speed went from dead calm to “ I had no idea this thing could go this fast “ in a matter of minutes. I’m thinking they have made improvements in the acceleration and handling over the last 38 years.

Its hard as an englishmen but the american carriers are great engineering. Its crazy how something that size can manoeuvre so well. All i can imagine though is all the stress on the frame and rudders while carrying out these manoeuvres.

It would be pretty radical to waterski behind.

Wishing the Navy and US success with this class of carriers. I know you got some hurdles to get over yet. Good luck and God bless

Impressive to see such a gargantuan machine turn so fast. I can't imagine how big this absolute unit of a ship is IRL. I know there are photos and stats, but you never really see the scale of these things until you see them in person

Reminds me of the video from WW2 of the Big E turning like a sports car!
