The aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) completes the first scheduled explosive event of Full Ship Shock Trials while underway in the Atlantic Ocean, June 18, 2021. The U.S. Navy conducts shock trials of new ship designs using live explosives to confirm that the warships can continue to meet demanding mission requirements under harsh conditions they might encounter in battle.

The United States Navy takes its stewardship responsibilities seriously when it comes to protecting life on and under the seas. The USS Gerald R. Ford's (CVN 78) Full Ship Shock Trials were conducted within a narrow schedule that complies with environmental mitigation requirements, respecting known migration patterns of marine life in the test area. Multiple Protected Species Observers were lookouts posted on Ford, on a Marine Animal Response Team support vessels, and in marine mammal observation aircraft to monitor for and detect any marine mammal activity prior to, during, and after the explosive event. Explosive events were not conducted if marine mammals were in proximity.

A carrier moves in excess of 43 mph, the test would be more effective if the ship was passing closer to the explosion at speed. It would be interesting to see how the propeller and rudder would react passing at 2 to 300 yards at speed. Also turning away from the shock wave as the ship rolls exposing the thinner hull plates near the keel. If you're gonna test it go for broke, it's better we find out during a test than to have the enemy figure it out during battle.

Back home we used to use a Dupont spinner for fishing--that is, your basic Chevy hubcap floating a stick of dynamite. I can't imagine all the fish they could gather up after this.
