I was raised in a " full gospel" church/denomination full of false teaching and no assurance whatsoever. One could lose his salvation but no one could tell me if I had or what it takes to lose it. Led into despair, I fell into sin and hopelessness. I thank God for RC and people like him who preach the truth in love. One thing I heard RC say when I was very young was"sola scriptura" -it never left my mind.

YouTube prevents us from adding full web links, but you can go to our website and then add this string to the address and you should get to the product page -

Or do a search on our site (ligonier.org) for "what did jesus do"

Thanks for asking.

It's true what RC said, yet the main reason why John (Jesus' half cousin) came to baptize is given in
*John 1:29-34.

“The Baptism of Jesus (Rebirth in the Holy Spirit)

The baptism administered by St. John the Baptist was a call for repentance and purification, the sign of the desire of the soul to be cleansed and to prepare the way and the space within herself for the gift of Redemption, the life of grace, the means of Salvation, which the longed-for Messiah, the Son of God made Man, would bring upon earth. The Sacramental Baptism instituted by Jesus frees the soul of the stain of original sin and activates the gift of grace within her, making her a child of God. However, the life of grace received through Baptism can be rendered sterile by lack of correspondence, or even suppressed by sin, since all Sacraments produce their effects within the soul according to her dispositions. But when the Divine Will reigns in the soul as her very life, baptizing every fiber of her being, she comes to possess the very source of grace, she lives of Divine Life; and that very Divine Will which has the power to purify, to baptize, to generate Divine Life is her Will too.” ❤️‍🔥

John was telling them to Repent because the Scribs and Pharisees were teaching AGAINST THE WORD OF GOD and Jesus was coming. Man can only fully Repent if God gives it. Man can do NOTHING of his own for Salvation. Salvation is ALL of GOD and NONE of man. Jesus is the AUTHOR "AND" FINISHER of OUR FAITH.

why do the two witnesses come to mind when i hear this?
there must be a reason??

Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. Not the Kingdom of God. John Baptized to Manifest Christ to fulfill all righteousness. This was the worst explanation I have heard for why John the Baptist was baptizing. Replacement theology is so disappointing!

He says Kingdom of heaven not kingdom of God. Very important difference!

Because they didn't have the Holy Spirit.

So what really happened is that Peter, Paul and a few other guys were watching Mary Magdalene and her friends take their weekly baths in the river.  After they left they saw Jesus and John up river and they were playing some kind of naked dunking game.  So Peter says, "Hey, what are you guys doing?"  Jesus and John were caught off guard so John says,   "Oh... um....  I'm dunking Jesus in the river like that story we heard in school about Achilles.  You know, make him immortal."  So the guys kinda say, "Oh,  ok, whatever."  As they are walking away Peter says, "Those two are always playing grab ass somewhere while the rest of us men are spying on the ladies."  Then Paul says, "That John guy is Batshit Crazy, and now he's playing some naked dunking game with Jesus.  I mean.... not that there's anything wrong with that."  So from then on they referred to John as "John the Batshit".  Move ahead a few centuries, several different language translations of the story, and "Batshit" became "Baptist".  So basically baptism is based on two naked guys dunking each other in a river.

lol. John called Israel to be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. R.C Sproul doesn't teach that baptism is for the forgiveness of sins, but for babies. Sproul is a great teacher, but needs to read the his word.
