This skill video demonstrates how to force entry through an outward-swinging door.
CAUTION: Firefighters must maintain communication and coordinate actions at all times during forcible entry. Maintain control of the door at all times.
NOTE: Always remember to “try before you pry.”
Removing the Hinges Method
Step 1: Size up the door and lock.
Step 2: Place the fork end of the Halligan between the top hinge and the door.
Step 3: Pry up or down.
Step 4: Twist the Halligan from side to side to loosen the hinge mounting screws, if necessary.
Step 5: Pull the hinge clear of the door.
Step 6: Repeat to pry and remove the other hinges.
Step 7: Open the door.
Adz-end Method
Step 1: Size up the door and lock.
Step 2: Firefighter #1: Place the adz end of the Halligan just above or below the lock. If there are two locks, place the adz between the locks.
Step 3: Firefighter #2: Strike the Halligan using the flat-head axe on the surface behind the adz, driving the adz into the space between the door and the jamb and past the interior door jamb.
Step 4: Firefighter #1: Pry down and out, applying force to the forked end of the tool to separate the door from the jamb.
Step 5: Open the door.
