I think not knowing who the clone is is also a psychological defense mechenism as with knowing their intelligence and ego will cause them to infight but without there will always be a hint of doubt of who is the orginal is

If I’m not mistaken as long as they make a single clone their intellect isn’t fully warped so they are pretty competent.

They're not actually evil. See the original purpose for being villains was actually to get enough money to continue their research and then at some along the way they just kind of forgot their purpose and decided to unleash out of chaos with no purpose whatsoever
