The method may be old but it's not normally taught in text books so Professor Po-Shen Loh deserves credit for popularizing it.

Before watching this video, I abandoned the sums and products method when the answers weren't easy to solve in my head with simple math because they were square roots. Now, thanks to Professor Po-Shen Loh's method, I can solve all those difficult quadratic equations rather easily avoiding factoring and the dreaded quadratic formula.

When the linear coefficient is even I like to use a simplified quadratic formula:

ax^2 - 2bx + c = 0

x = (b +- sqrt(b^2 - ac)) / a

So here we have x = 6 +- sqrt(6^2 - 7) = 6 +- sqrt(29)

Tbh in my opinion the formula is far more useful because of its usefulness in algebra. In this one you need to set to variables to add up to b and then solve for u to be able to use it algebraicly.

This is not new, it's just the p-q-formula. Also, it's not a technique from poh shen loh. This is taught in German schools for example and it's known for 4000 years already according to Wikipedia.
