Limit Point Analysis—Or, Driving to Stop Safely within the Distance You Can See to Be Clear.

We have a visual limit when traversing hills and curves.
The visual limit is also referred to as the vanishing point. It is the furthest point we can see at any given moment.

What we cannot see lies beyond the vanishing point.
Most drivers might think in terms of how fast can I take this curve, instead of could I stop safely if I had to?

You need to consider what could there be around the next curve or over the top of the hill.
A deer in the road, a car accident, a fallen tree, or downed powerline, an oncoming car in my lane.

Imagine being distracted just for a split second when entering a curve or cresting a hill. And a surprise is waiting for you.

So don’t think in terms of just speed. Imagine what awaits you on the other side and choose a speed that you can stop safely on your side of the visual limit point.
