The Brussels Premetro

In Brussels we can find a curious system, half metro half tram called Premetro. Basically is a tunnel crossing the north/south axis of the city with Bombardier Flexity trams running, instead of traditional metro trains. Similar to other Stadtbahn or light rail systems.

Tram lines 3 and 4 use this tunnel as a backbone, connecting Midi and North mainline railway stations via the city centre. This creates a frequent service on the centralmost part of the city, where is most needed, and is cheaper than a conventional metro system. Same systems are used in other cities across Europe.
