As someone from Hong Kong, the humour in movies is very different from international ones, the jokes also take quite some time to understand if you’re new to Cantonese

Rush hour is one of those rare movies whose sequel didn't fail

I don't recall this at all from listening to the DVD commentary for Rush Hour. The Director basically said that they approached Jackie with it saying "It's not the greatest script, but we think we can make it work with you as the lead". And Jackie was so impressed with his honesty he agreed to do it.
