there's a small gap between all the pieces in the first configuration so that when the pieces are rearranged the gap instead appears in the center making it big enough to fit the small square

At the start every piece has a tiny bit of space on the sides. When relocated that space is relocated to the middle for the tiny extra piece

The boarder gives the illusion that the shape is the exact same size both times, but the square is slightly smaller in the first configuration.

Grand Illusions did a video demonstrating different variations of this "missing area" paradox.

It fits snugger along the edges when arranged so the square fits in the middle

Its the same as the chocolate bar paradox.
If you rearrange the pieces of the chocolate bar, it seems like its the same size but its not.

think of it like the infinite chocolate trick that you've probably seen somewhere around the internet.

whenever you're moving around the pieces, you're moving it around to the point where the empty space that's was around the pieces are equivalent to the same area as the square.

I do this often to fit more dishes into my cupboard and it’s lead to me being the only one who can properly fit all of my dishes away.

That's what the engineers mean when they say "tolerances add up"

same deal with the infinite chocolate bar square with the diagonal cut and shuffle.

first setup the blocks were wobbly, the second set up the blocks are all tightly packed.

This, my friends, is the idea behind Zero Tolerance machines.

In the first configuration the outer corners of the puzzle pieces are not exactly 90 degrees so when you reconfigure them to be 90 degrees the barely visible gap previously on the outside turns into a square in the middle if that makes any sense

Like Nancy Pelosi's liquor bottle. There's a little bit more empty space each time it's opened.

It's not a paradox, it's a re4 inventory management rule

It shifts the axis of the top Left and bottom Right squares, that's why it doesn't show them being placed in because you'd see them shift, only took 2 watches but we got to the bottom of it

There's a perfect way to stack boxes inside a van.

And there's the shitty way.

If they had filmed how they put in the 4 pieces (presumably not with ease) in the second configuration, it would be a lot more obvious. Just like that famous "not right triangle" reconfiguration where the angle doesn't match.

Even just in the thumbnail you can clearly see that the outer lines of the pieces aren't straight, and there's a gap between the pieces and the outside edge.
