VIDEO SUMMARY

This video is about Frederick Taylor and his theory of Scientific Management.

In this video, Jim argues that Taylor believed that the most important factor that motivated employees was money.

Taylor thought that the best way to motivate employees was to pay them based on their output, and to closely control and supervise them at work. This ties in with an autocratic style of leadership and management, where managers tell people what to do and require that they implement them. Piece rate is the method by which the employee feels motivated to work hard.

Jim also discusses the implications of Taylor's theory in the modern world. He argues that piece rate, or paying employees for what they produce, has been a common feature of work in many industries for a long time.

The video mentions that businesses like Amazon and other e-commerce businesses have been accused of operating sweatshop conditions in some of their warehouses, where employees are highly controlled, monitored and rewarded based on how efficient and productive they are. This can be seen as a link between Taylor's theories and the conditions that arise in manufacturing facilities in emerging markets

Frederic Taylor's first job was as a foreman of a machine shop. He applied his organizational skills to finding the most efficient way to cut metal and along the way invented High Speed Steel. You can read his research report that was originally published in 1906 as a kindle book. "On The Art Of Cutting Metals" by Frederic Taylor.
