Downsides of Using Projector For Mid-Battle Ship Repair on Space Engineers

A short video explaining the downsides of using a projection or projector to do mid-battle ship repairs with welders on Space Engineers somewhat in response to some of the responses from my previous video about ship self-repair welders

I swear you're the only creator in this game that actually takes PCU into account when designing things.

Goddamnit Keen, so they include projector PCU into max PCU limit INTENTIONALLY! MY BASE GOT RAIDED TWICE BECAUSE VIRTUAL PCU LIMIT!!!

Your right I had forgotten that the PCU of the projector turned on is much more then just the projector itself and the blocks it project: I'm too used to just turning off the PCU limit. or going to servers where the PCU limit is way higher than the official servers.

Even with the workaround you still need a couple hundred pcu and you only get 5 welders on official servers and if you would just put all that pcu into more layers of frontal armor your ship would be massively improved.

As you said each to their own and I will never argue with that. I do want to point out that pcu limit is removable as well as block limits. That is literally an artificial limit that you can choose to accept and work with or turn off completely like I do and have less problems with the repair problem. Try a test of turning off pcu limit and block limits. Have one or more repair projectors setup and have the option turned on to show only build able. Put welders spaced apart starting at the main cargo box with parts in it and then every so often spreading out to the weapons. If your ship isn't massive then you can get away with it and as things are destroyed like conveyers the weld behind the damage will just weld up everything needed going forward. It's like installing a welder on the connection point of a welding pit and tuning on all welder even the ones not built yet and letting the pit build itself. This may be considered a cheat or being cheap I don't really care as it works. Oh as always I still enjoy all your vids.

I use projectors for repairs but I also use the build and repair system mod alot in my survival world. I have a modular ship I can switch tools on but I mostly don't use the welders honestly. They always seem to bug out when I try to use them.

The most organised ship I ever did had four projectors dedicated to repair, so I could prioritise repair of relevant sections.

1: Production & Power.
2: Propulsion & Pressure.
3: Projectiles.
4: Plates & Pleasure.

Way too much effort to make, and barely ever came in useful. lol.

The one cool thing was I could project the "Core" blueprint which was just the projectors a little frame work and a connector. and then build it in layers. Several times set it up with nanites just to watch it grow organically... though never did the timer set up to make it really awesome. lol.

Not to mention projectors can also cause a bit of lag, especially when replacing a damaged block. It may also not even be able to replace the blocks at times due to floating objects, I know there are a lot of people that disagree with your views on this, and I am 1 of them that thinks welders and projectors are good. But I have weighed the pros and cons. I can 100% agree with your opinions on the issues this setup has. There are many more flaws as well as advantages the ship repair system has. Perhaps having a sit down with a few friends and having a TED talk would be a gr8 way for others to get a good idea of whether or not this setup is good for them

Can you do a video on different power sources/power generating plocks and their upsides and down sides? I'm making my first ship but I just realized that using a reactor and artillery turrets would be uranium expensive so I wanna look into the forms of power generation, but I'm not sure which is best for my ship.

Ship welders for defensive purposes are not very good, but can they be used for offensive purposes more effectively?

Hello! Hopefully this time they understood the "survival" context, and that you used to play, and be the admin on some of the official survival servers

The important part to take away from this is that it counts every block projected as 1PCU. So if you have a special blueprint for repairs, you needn't worry about it maxing out based on types of blocks being projected.

I still think mid battle repair is useful when putting Welders in a Sturdy place
I basically use one welder between my Jumpdrive and main Hydrogen tank and the rest of the 4 welders have their own small Cargo container that are nicely Sandwiched between Artillery Turrets that have great durability.

isnt that what the "project only buildable" option is meant to workaround so it uses less PCU? Or does it just use less gpu power that way?
To be fair, i never really used it in mid battle, only after ... to repair and restore, not to exploit it as a health potion for my ship. :D

I really like your videos lately ... cant exactly point out why but i guess that doesn't matter anyway.

Huh... Never knew the projectors ate PCU like that... I always assumed it was good for sitting at home base doing repairs or projects. Guess that's up in the air too now...

They fixed this on Xbox a while back it stopped you from building ships on pcu limited servers. I tired building my Freighter and it was 17, 500 pcu and I could only build 2500 worth of it before I ran out of pcu cause the projector takes the pcu away for some reason. Even with show only blocks that can be built on it still took full pcu ship price away. Glad they fixed it though👍 on Xbox was able to build more ships yesterday no issues.

I don’t get this pcu thing
The limit is high and you can turn it off

The amount of welders needed to repair a ship in active combat is too big and would make any ship very fat. However, if it was used for regeneration after getting away from the action it could work, imagine something like you escaped but you want to try to land a final blow but you need to wait for your weapons to "regenerate"

yeah or you could just turn off the pcu limit if you feel like your pc can handle it
