10 WEIRD GM Muscle Cars You’ve NEVER Heard Of!

Next time you want to win a bet with that guy who always claims to be an expert on muscle cars, ask him to name a handful of intermediate-sized GM muscle cars from the mid-'70s. Even the most boastful poseur will be able to spit out at least a few names from the '60s and early '70s, models like the Pontiac GTO and Chevy Chevelle will likely be at the top of the list. But ask about anything from the mid-'70s Malaise Era , and you'll probably get a blank stare.

Maybe it's just us, but the Malaise Era gets a bad rap due to things like ugly bumpers and lo-po smog motors—both "born-with" issues that hardly matter in today's aftermarket. GM was certainly not immune to that criticism, and the GM A-body platform that was used between 1973 and 1977 is no exception. Even though nearly everything built in that era was glacially slow, the GM intermediates of the mid 1970s offered some beautiful shapes and a very capable chassis, making them perfect candidates for modifying today. Keep watching for more details and examples about GM's colonnade A-body platform.

1) I hate AI, if you cant say cubic inch dont say anything at all !

2) None of these cars are "unknown", "never heard of", nor "forgotten" we remember and miss them greatly !

3) Sadly most did not survive because: a) no one considered them classics at the time and b) they were made out of mostly recycled trash metal that rusted from the inside out, many were lost within 5 yrs of manufacture !

4) I actually owned several of these vehicles and would love to have any of them back as they were fantastic, fun cars !

Dad had a 73 Pontiac Grand-Am, four door, Blue, white interior, white vinyl top. Automatic, 455, 650 four barrel carburetor. Great car, great memories. Bought it in 1977.

Colonnade A-Body cars were truly underrated! While everyone goes crazy for '64-'72 A-Bodies, these ‘73-’77 gems have so much potential! From the NASCAR-banned Chevy Laguna S3 to the rare Pontiac Can-Am, these cars were ahead of their time. Imagine picking one up for a fraction of the cost today and turning it into a beast that stands out at any car show. Time to bring these forgotten muscle machines back into the spotlight! Who else thinks these need more love? 🔥💯

I was a car guy and never heard of a Can Am until I made a new friend. Went to his home town and there it was. Only one I had ever seen. On my way back home I saw one in a parking lot of a restaurant. I was convinced his was stolen. I used the pay phone at the restaurant, way before cell phone days, and called him. He ran out to the out building and said his car was still there. Never saw another one other than his.

I have owned my 1977 Can Am for over 44 years. It has a 462 c.i.d. engine, ram air 4 valves, ram air III heads, a built Turbo 400 and a custom 12-bolt rear differential with 4.10 gears on a Moroso brute strength posi. It gets a whopping 3 miles to gallon, but boy is it a fast 3-miles, I got her when she was barely 3 years old. Nobody knew what it was back then. Thanks for sharing this video.

I had a 73 LeMans when I was 16. With help from my dad, we coverted it to a 455, TH400, 4:11 posi-trac, street beast. Finally had to sell it at 18 due to excessive speeding tickets! Good memories!

Not exactly the best decade for American car design, but some of these are actually beautiful.

1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 350 engine, automatic transmission, dual exhaust fed through a pair of headers, cream colored paint, dark brown vinyl half roof, and medium brown color vinyl seats/interior. Mounted some huge tires (50's on the back and 70's on the front) on to a set of Keystone Klassic chrome rims. Very nice car back in the late 1970's to about 1985 or so. Loved that car.

These cars were never muscle cars, they were just pretenders.

I had a 1974 Pontiac LeMans Sport Coupe. Bucket seats, console shift and an aftermarket, non leaking, sunroof. When l bought it in '81 it didn't run very well, it had crossed plug wires. Got that straightened out and it ran better. While cleaning under the hood l came across a factory sticker that read, Notice: This engine is designed to be run on 98 or better octane. I then realized it was a factory high performance engine. At that time l could still get 105 octane, put about 1/2 tank in it and BOY HOWDY, that engine was a runner. So much so that the transmission gave up. Got that rebuilt with a good shift kit and 2nds were easy. Should never have sold it.

And you do realize you're speaking to a whole world of people right? Maybe you never heard of these cars but there's still a lot of us that remember when the first models rolled off the line. And it wasn't that long ago.

The reason that you can buy them for dirt cheap price was new emission and lowering compression pressure of the engines to be able to deal with unleaded fuel caused any car after 1970 specially after 1971 comes out with low HP!
like 350CID with 165 HP same as 98 honda accord HP

or 400CID with 185 HP that was and still is a joke with not much of the lowering fuel consumption
they were joke as far as HP, and that's why nobody cares about them

I had a '73 Malibu (with a 305, I think) in the mid '80s: it was a rust-bucket - but also a solid, reliable "driver" that let me save up a chunk of money for a house. I enjoyed it.
