I feel bad for the guy who lived in the basement

That basement story sounds like a male version of Cinderella; w/o the fairies and stuff

The one about the basement makes my blood boil. Not only how can one person be that vile, but FOUR. The person loses their dad and they made a child live in a cold unfinished basement that resembled a prison cell for like 8 years, and tooma advantage of his naiveness and made him think it was OK, including his own MOM. But she treats kids that aren't even hers like royalty? They spend the money the guy should have gotten from his dad to go prance around the world in relaxation while the person who deserved it the most was left behind, then after all this they manipulate and lie to him and make it out to be his fault? Who does that? Especially their own mom. Why she treated people that rent her kids better than her own kid? I hope the family and especially that mom rot.

The basement story is truly messed up there is only one response to that and its to disown your family, dont let them expect better treatment than they gave you

Reversed (I thought It was normal): when I was 16 I would have friends over whenever I could, (lived just outside of town so it wasn't berry often. Anyways I had my best friend and my cousin over and my step dad started going off about the loud music we where listening to. After telling him to piss off if a few creative ways, he then started yelling up the stairs that if I wouldn't turn the music down he was going to shoot me. I brushed it off and told him again piss off, my friend and cousin were pretty terrified. My friend nervously stated something like "he's joking right", and I went on to explain how my step dad loaded his gun and would point it in my face shaking trying to scare me but that I didn't think he had the balls to pull the trigger. Friend had his parents pic him up right away and didn't really see him much after that and my cousin wouldnt come out to my place anymore. As I got older I started to grasp the gravity of the situations I had been in and realize now it was far from normal.

when i was a kid, i was always severely punished for screaming, because obviously screaming means youre in danger and if you scream when youre not in danger thats bad. i went to my friends house and they were very loud, and i couldnt fathom how they could possibly not know how to walk and run quietly, how they could be comfortable screaming and yelling. i later realized i was, in fact, being abused, and only recently did i realize that i cant imagine myself screaming if i was in actual danger, either

I had a bf in high school who was from a rougher side of town, great kid and person who I’m still friends with to this day but his house growing up was filthy. It really made me wanna throw up, it STUNK, the stairs were rotting, the floor boards had a MASSIVE holes in them, they left spilled food on the floor for days, all the laundry was on the floor, they even occasionally found dead rats and animals in the mess. I felt awful for him but he seemed mostly fine with it ??? we mostly just hung out at my house after that.

5:03 this story made me laugh so, so hard. The description of the friend's return an hour later had me in tears. So good.

First dinner with my GFS parents, they were having a nice conversation and did not yell or leave the table as soon as they were finished eating.
Told my Gf "It is odd how nice your family is at dinner" then i realized that. "No.. It's just my family that has never had a normal family dinner.. Ever."

I had a friend who's house smelled like cat piss and dog shit. My mom refused to go to their door to pick me up. Just sat in the car and honked. When I got in the car she would roll down all the windows. When I got home I was told to shower and change my clothes. His whole family was totally nose blind to it. They had no idea.

Basement one is actually depressing as hell, I’m so sorry for them, that childhood was rough and unfair as hell.

In high school, i was invited to a classmate's home. It was in a very nice middle class development with clean streets, smooth sidewalks, and nicely manicured lawns. Then there was his house. The lawn was patchy; overgrown, immensely so in small spots, dead in others. This wasn't an old house yet it looked like it had decades of wear and tear. We go inside and there's dog crap everywhere. Then the smell hits me. His dad is on the couch, stirred by the sound of the opening door. He's so drunk he can't form coherent sentences. I'm not kidding when i say it reminded me of the way stroke victims struggle to speak. I'm immediately uncomfortable and say I'm going to use the bathroom. Big mistake. The bathroom looks like it was used by a busload of drunken blind people with stomach viruses. Filth everywhere. Random highway gas station bathrooms are cleaner. Next to the toilet was a baseboard heater that was so rusted out from bad aim by his father, the Titanic had to be in better condition.

When we entered his kitchen, once the light was turned on, i saw what i thought was garbage on the floor scatter. They were cockroaches.

As soon as i entered, i wasn't planning on staying. I came over to jam with our guitars. But i made my exit right after that. I couldn't be polite and suffer the dime tour any longer

The one about the parents shouting when they had friends over really hit home with me. It always happened with my mom. No boundaries at all. No thought that someone else is seeing this and they will go back and tell their families about it. I remember playing on our computer with a friend when my mom would just blaze right in and start shouting about something that was out of my control. For example, she had come back home and the wind had knocked over our garbage can at the front of the house and there was garbage on the street. We were in a point of the house where this wasn't visible and we were engrossed in the computer game. Well, me and my brother, in another room, were ate alive for the garbage can being knocked over. This is just one example out of many. I would then go to friends houses and be amazed and envious at how courteous and quiet they all were. My mom would then meet the same friends in the street and be all smiles and talk light hearted to them and I'm thinking, do you not remember that they saw you shouting like a maniac? Are you not embarrassed?

As long as I can remember, my parents have always slept in separate rooms, and I mean like rooms that were on opposite sides of the house. Me and my sister thought this was normal until we realized everyone else’s parents actually slept in the same bed together in the same room…my parents are getting a divorce currently, as they should.

I was very offended when my mother left my high school graduation ceremony and took a cab home. She later said she didn't feel good. But that also that she was an immigrant and didn't understand those kinds of ceremonies, and they were boring to her. My dad stayed though.

Who else thought the "cool cup" story was going to be about an alcoholic parent?
