Ads on mobile can't be skipped anymore but if you're watching on a laptop ads can be skipped. Google seems to be trying hard to force users to get the subscription.

I do the other way though, firstly play the video you wanna watch then swap it down while the add is running then select any Youtube shorts from the recommendations and then press the back button to return to the same screen and then press the play button on the screen below of the video you were waiting to watch. The ads will definitely dissappear using this trick. GOOD LUCK, ENJOY!!

I've been using it for a year it works even if you click on close clicking on one of the 3 options and send isn't necessary but some ads don't have this option guess they pay more

Nope. YouTube won’t allow you to do that anymore. I guess they caught on. If I cannot skip the ad I just exit the video

Found something new recently, If you own a macbook pro with touch bar, you can skip the ads by just sliding through the timeline on the touchbar.
