Sunscreen Controversy Scandal? - Purito, Klairs, REN & Dr Jart SPF Skepticism & What You Should Do

I want to state, the sunscreen that you are willing to use every single day is going to be better than other sunscreens which you may not apply daily, or use liberally. The current discussion on Purito is really based on anecdotal evidence from individuals. That being said, it is always best to go with your own instincts. Don't believe everything you read and always do your own research.

I never thought I’d be this intrigued by sunscreen drama lmfaooo

I always questioned how smaller brands can make mineral sunscreens that leave almost no white cast while still claiming big UVB & UVA protection numbers while major brands like Neutrogena & L’Oréal’s LRP & Skinceuticals struggle

I've heard people question how effective the Purito Centella sunscreen is because it only contains two filters. I use it and like it but as a 'day off' sunscreen as I like the security of a water resistant SPF for when I'm out and about. It's important to remember that these are made by cosmetic scientists know more than normal people and % of sun filters isn't always indicative of what the SPF result will be as it's also down the formula as a whole. Antioxidants boost protection etc and how the filters are dispersed plays a big part too. 5% zinc oxide in two sunscreens might have two different SPF ratings. I'd like to think that korean and other Asian sunscreens offer the protection they state considering the beauty standards they have in Asia. I think sometimes people in the states are sceptical of sunscreens outside of the U.S, especially when they don't contain many filters because they're used to normally seeing about 4 or 5 UV filters in an SPF. I'd feel much safer with a European/Australian/Asian sunscreen than one from the U.S as the newer generation filters tend to be more photostable than the ones approved by the FDA. But like you said Sarah, the best sunscreen is one you'll use every day and something is better than nothing ❤️

I am SO glad you did this video. I love the Purito but have heard the mumbling about it and was wondering. I’m in AZ and it needs to be 50+

Very interesting! I ve been using the purito centella and the comfy for over a year in Greece (super sunny) including outdoor activities and seaside with a skincare that has vit C 20% every morning and tretinoin/or retinol in the summer at night.I had no issues so far.

This is kind of disheartening for someone whose on a budget and has dark skin. Finding good quality sunscreens that don't leave a white cast, doesn't irritate skin, inexpensive and actually do its job is like hunting for a needle in a hay stack. I refuse to pay 30+ for a sunscreen and honestly I'm tired of the "sunscreen hunt" in itself. And now that I know of this controversy I'm paranoid. I was literally about to buy the Klairs sunscreen with my next check and here I am rethinking it. Even though I'm complaining now I probably will go back to looking around b/c I actually do appreciate being informed on whether a product is really what it says it is but it aint fun and its tiring. :/

Purito and klairs are my little babies and i always reapply them even when i am indoors or outdoors, and i have no issues with my skin. People who are claiming that those 3spfs don’t contain enough protections, this shows that they do not follow instructions on how to reapply spf properly. Every spf has instructions on how to reapply after 2hours, so if they do not do that there is a big possibility they will not get enough protection. To be honest i am going to continue using purito and klairs because have no issues with these lovely holy grail babies.

Another great topic, thank you. A few years ago I bought a double pack of Neutrogena SPF50 from Costco, went to the park with the kids, sat around with friends for 3 hrs while kids played. Got tanned/burned on the areas not covered by clothing, despite reapplication. I was so mad! Especially for the sun damage to the kids! I'd never had a problem with Neutrogena before, but I started looking for other brands. It's hard to trust, regardless of brand/country of origin, after something like that happens. I don't expect wrinkle miracles from serums, but I do expect sun protection from sunscreen! That's not supposed to be a gamble.

What do you think of the Comfy Block from Purito? In my opinion, since it's a mineral based sunscreen, it shouldn't have the same problems but I'd love to know your take on it 😊

Hi Sarah I use the Purito everyday on my fitzpatrick one skin. I'm someone who gets prickly heat and burns very quickly in the sun. I live in Scotland so our Summers are not as hot as the equator etc. I don't sunbathe ever and i'm careful how much exposure I get, but I still walk about in the Summer and get a normal amount of incidental exposure. During this year I wore the Purito exclusively as my main facial sunscreen, although many days I wore a bb cream or cc cream with a little extra spf. I did not have any sunburn/redness and no prickly heat at all. I go through a tube on head and neck every six weeks so I apply a decent amount each time. I'm also a tretinoin user which would contribute to being even more sun sensitive. My freckles have actually lightened this year (which is probably due to the addition of azelaic acid into my routine), but surely would have been curtailed if my spf wasn't working. Percentages of ingredients aren't always the full story and formulation is something only cosmetic chemists are fully aware of. My understanding is that to have an spf or pa/star/UVA rating these products have to be tested. The lab mentioned is troubling, but surely not all these labs are giving fraudulent results. Europe, Australia, Korea and Japan are using more advanced/newer filters than the US and also test differently. Unless it is proven otherwise my experience has been really positive with these filters. Older chemical filters normally sting and physical filters really dry out my rosacea and eczema prone skin. These are working for me - so why would I let scare mongering put me off? Best wishes.

Yes, there is this controversy regarding those 2 sunscreens, BUT i DONT care 😂
i have hated sunscreens my entire life, , i finally came to the point to be committed to wear an spf when i go out, ONLY because of Klairs and Purito 😍💖 !! .
so regardless what being said, iwill keep using those 2, even if the protection is not 50+, worst scenario ? half protection ? 25+ or 30, still so good 😁 👏

i wouldnt be shocked if that information has been leaked through Big corporations / luxury brands .Purito and Klairs have definitely done REVOLUTIONARY when it comes to price point, product experience, & ingredients used ! ... and this have obviously affected sales negatively somewhere else 😁

I really do hope they test them! The formula and application of these sunscreens are so much better than western ones but would be nice to be sure that we’re getting the protection we need :/

Since Purito unscented was released and YT channels started to review it, many said that it's an "indoors sunscreen". It's not waterproof so it's not reliable for sports, humid or hot environment, because you would sweat it off. I live in a cool climate where the uv index reaches 5 during mid summer at it's highest and winters are 0 (midday). I can perfectly rely on Purito to protect my face here where I live. I didn't burn or tan from my face while I used it all last summer as an everyday sunscreen. I used it on my 90min walks. Of course I would take another waterproof sunscreen with me if I would travel to a more hot climate for a holiday. I have the LRP shaka fluid but it's alcohol content makes my face itch like crazy, and I can't stand it.

I agree that the best sunscreen is the one you like to use every day. If you tan or burn you surely notice that something IS wrong and you should either change the sunscreen or stay away from the sun! It's that easy. To my knowledge, if you burn although having a correctly applied sunscreen on, its UVB factor is too low. If you tan, it's because the UVA protection is too weak. Of course if you don't have any protection you will both burn and become tan (not very fair people) eventually.

When I started getting into Korean sunscreens, it struck me how little their percentages of UV filters are. I also have used BASF sunscreen simulator which generates the possible SPF rating based on the % of UV filters. If you try inputting the % of UV filters there, it would say that Purito would have a smaller SPF than advertised or even the Australian Gold. As I started researching more, I’ve found that it isn’t always about %, particle size and added ingredients and full formulations play a role in determining the SPF rating. We can also see this in Australian Gold Tinted Sunscreen. Compared to conventional physical sunscreens, the Australian Gold have smaller % of physical filters but if you use it, you’ll still get a whitecast which is why they made it tinted. I assumed that the particle size they used it is bigger which gives it the whitecast w/o having a high %. Let’s just hope the regulatory bodies are actually doing their job in approving these sunscreens for sale.

I love Purito sunscreen. This sunscreen changed my habits about using sunscreen. It doesn’t claim to be waterproof or water resistant. I make sure I re-apply through the day and be generous with the amount. I can’t stand American sunscreen at all and find they are inferior to Japanese and Korean sunscreen. I tested and tried so many American brands that I stopped wearing sunscreen because they were terrible. Asians sunscreen is what credited to my better sun scare habits.

Totally agree. Used both Purito Centella unscented and comfy water at the beach over 2 days-applied everything 2 hours, didn’t swim and sat under an umbrella and my sunspots darkened and I got a slight sunburn. never again will I stray from Australian Gold.

I live in Sydney, Australia and summer is approaching. I don’t go out often nor do I go to the beach. I’ve been using the Purito for 7 months and wanted to know which sunscreen would you recommend for sensitive skin and that doesn’t contain those toxic filters
