I went to Australia and New Zealand this past May and saw the Toyota Hilux everywhere. I really like them and I noiticed they're also sold in Mexico. I'm moving to San Diego next year and I'm tempted to buy on in Mexico!

This still doesn't explain why. I mean Toyota made a whole new truck, Tacoma, for the US market. Doesn't explain why Toyota decided to build a factory and design a whole new truck. When they could have just built a factory here for the Hilux.

As far back as I remember Toyota HILUX has been synonymous with utility, off-road and quality. If I needed something like that this is what I'd choose. Heck, I would even choose it as a family car if they didn't slam a 200% tax on top of it here in my country making it 3 times as expensive :(

Its because this truck simply wouldnt fit in the market.
The Hilux is a commercial vehicle designed to be indestructible even in extreme territories.
North american buyers prefer a smooth ride, a good acceleration and more luxury features. Pickups are used for daily driving and not necessarily for offroading. Toyota managed to made the Tacoma and Tundra reliable but not necessarily in a way the Hilux has to be in some other Markets.

Why do Americans and Canadians call everything illegal. It’s not illegal. You can import one and drive without being arrested and sent to the block. There is just a trade agreement between countries and car manufacturers on which cars, trucks and vans can enter different markets. It has a lot to do with gas, diesel production / costs, emissions, vehicle sizes etc. it’s definitely not illegal.

Recently doug demuro reviewed the latest Hilux and claimed it has the harshest ride of all pick ups, its really meant for being used and overloaded.
