Greenland prime minister says he's ready to speak with Trump, emphasizes desire for independence

Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede said in a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that he's ready to speak with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. In the weeks leading up to his inauguration, Trump has expressed interest in U.S. control of Greenland and would not rule out using military force or economic coercion to gain control of the island.

This entire situation is so bizarre. Greenland’s social programs and infrastructure are heavily reliant on Danish grants. At least 25% of the Greenlandic GDP is reliant on Denmark. So independence has always been the goal, but as a very planned and long-term goal, which the Danish accept. But now the PM is saying it needs to happen now, in response to Trump. And now the PM wants to talk to Trump? Trump’s strong man rhetoric is difficult enough, but this guy has just fed into it!? I don’t care if he says he wants independence, the timing of his remarks indicate something so much more sketchy. I genuinely believe, given Greenland still needs some type of financial aid, this guy is just trying to switch to a bigger economic caretaker like the U.S.

Misleading headline! The Greenlanders don't want to be Danes, and they don't want to be Americans! The PM said that very clearly. Trade with USA is a very different matter. Don't be misled!

Speaking as someone who has lived in Denmark, the Danish politicians and leaders are way better at looking after their people than American politicians and leaders. The USA is mostly run by oligarchs with the money to lobby. This is why minorities without enough political power like veterans, farmers, and many native tribes have been neglected forgotten or had their lands stolen from them one way or another.

This looks like a legal hostile take over where American interests need to convince half of the population of Greenland that becoming an American state is a good idea.
