Here's How I'd Rebuild My NES Collection From Scratch

I think we've all had those times in our lives where we've had to get rid of parts of our collection, either to take care of our families or just from an overwhelming amount of stuff that we needed a reprise. And while I certainly don't have the NES collection I used to, the one I have now is pretty much exactly where I want it to be - but I didn't get it in the order I'd want to.

If I had to start from scratch tomorrow - here's the things I'd make sure I owned in order to get my collection back in line with where I'd want it. How would you rebuild? Let me know.

I'm really glad you're getting the opportunity to rebuild your collection. I've been in the same situation in the past and I have a really nice one now. But you must, must get something better than the Retron 5. Mediocre emulation and input lag is a terrible curse. :)

Just sent this to a kid starting off his journey 😎 i restarted with New (AV) Famicom, i play on a pvm 2030.
Five games are hard to remember from when i reatarted, but i would think
1. Castlevania
2. Ghouls and Ghosts
3. Punchout
4. Mario 3
5. Gradius
Turtles 1 might have replaced one of those. Great video SP!

Heck yeah mega man. I don’t know that I’d pay the extra money for 5, but I have them all. Maybe get the Famicom version and save money. I love the way the Famicom rock man games look.

Nice video. I started collecting seriously in 1996. I have no clue if I could recover if I had to start over.

I used to have the Retron 5. I had a cartridge for each system and ran patches for whatever I wanted. Cool pirate machine.

If I ever got back into nes collecting, the five games I would start out with would be:

- A Boy and His Blob
- NES Open Tournament Golf
- Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!
- Tetris
- Maniac Mansion

Starting with SMB 3 and the OG Final Fantasy would give you hours upon hours of fun!
I'd add Castlevania to the list, its a genre defining title for sure.

My five would be: Mega Man 5, Super Mario Bros. 2, The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, and Slalom. I agree with you on the Top Loader, especially since pairing it with a CRT gives me access to Zapper games, but I have to shout out the AVS. It’s an FPGA console that in my opinion is better than the NES console Analogue put out years ago, and for WAY cheaper.

I am gonna have to look into that Retrobit Origin 8 controller. I could use a wireless NES option in my life. Easily some great choices here Jay! 🤙🏻 But as a kid who grew up with Blades of Steel and not Ice Hockey…well…🤔

First, I would start out with the NES Power Set CIB. That's the version my brother, sister and I got for Christmas in 1989. Aside from the pack in game I would get TMNT 2, Double Dragon 2, Bucky O'Hare, Battletoads/Double Dragon, and WWF WrestleMania Challenge. Loved the video, your choices are all great. Thank you.

The Epilogue GB Operator and a three ring zip up binder with baseball card sheets is a good start. Geek Tech Premium FRAM Cartridges are great with it.

Growing up I spent most of my time in the arcades and some of the early arcade ports were the reason I got a NES. So my nostalgia started in the arcades which is quite obvious with the list. And I would say one game could have been on the list but if you are starting out again would be difficult as you need a proper crt TV to play it and that is Hogans Alley.

I started a year ago with a RetroUSB AVS system (LOVE IT) paired with an Everdrive N8 Pro and the Retro-Bit Origin8 controllers. I hated the controllers, the wireless dongles would literally fall out of the console, even tried them on an original NES with the same results. Amazon reviews indicated I wasn't alone. Finally traded them in and bought the updated 8Bitdo N30 translucent black wireless controllers and I love them! USB-C charging and they work and fit flawlessly.
Currently up to 96 carts, around 12 of which were my originals from childhood I kept.
My top 5? Bionic Commando, Contra, Castlevania 1, Metal Gear, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero
