The Rise and Fall of the Rwandan Economic Miracle: What’s Next?

While Rwanda is a small East African nation, it has been the topic of much discussion among developmental economists for a number of years. The tragic Rwandan genocide that claimed so many lives in the mid-1990s and decimated the country's economy was one of the saddest events in recent history.

Thankfully, in the early 2000s, the country experienced incredible economic growth, and up until very recently, Rwandans were enjoying higher levels of economic freedom than ever before. The liberalisation that defined this period improved the life of all Rwandans, yet in recent years, that nation's economic freedom has collapsed.

What is going on in Rwanda? What caused the country to turn its back on economic freedom? And what can be done to get Rwanda, which many considered to be an economic miracle, back on track?

Interesting, 2019 is the year the new President of DRC started cracking down on mining frauds and smuggling, and Rwanda's economy began to decline.

You are talking about Rwanda but showing video clips of people who are not from Rwanda.

well I don't agree with the analysis bcz just as any other economy in the world Rwanda endured a shock in years 2021 to 2021 due to COVID-19 and the economy started recovering mid 2022, however due to the Ukrainian war that induced the inflationary pressures to rise causing a rising in inflation over the past months, however compared to most of the African economies and worldwide Rwanda has managed well both crisis and through the increase in trade partners and partnerships we are soon to recover .

regarding the judicial system in Rwanda I would like to invite u in Rwanda and make your own constant of how effective it is.

on the freedom of trade, Rwanda is doing better, bcz no one is hindered to enter the market, as the market is liberal.

finally on the fiscal Health given the massive projects Rwandan has undertaken many won't have profits in the nearest future together with the ease of taxes and the changes in the taxation system, all this will have a impact the will slightly be negative however in the short term bcz in the long run these will be more beneficial to the rwandan economy for a long period of time.

You will be disappointed. Rwanda’s determined path will not slow down.Nothing good that has happened to Rwanda was ever been predicted by anyone from the west.Perhaps you should watch your own economies as your dollar gets washed down the drain by the rest of the world.

The fall of Rwanda is imminent… a prominent factor that the presenter left out the fact that Rwanda was stealing a lot of minerals from DRC as it had their puppet Kabila at top of the country. Since Tshisekedi, who is a true Congolese took power in 2018, the stealing has become very hard … it is not because of Covid. Let’s remember that Rwanda is still a very poor African country and that is the fact.

I'd be stupid to invest in Rwanda for now. The current DRC government cracking in illegal mining will bring Rwanda to her knees. Rwanda is pushing for the cash cow refugee program with the UK but even that is another area with risk. More than 50% of Rwanda's budget is funded by donor money; they could wake up one day and stop the handouts. The risk in Rwanda boom is too high for an investor. Also talking politics I don't think 10% tutsi ruling 90% discontented hutu is sustainable in the long run and anything can happen.

I think Rwanda had a good run but I’m not sure they’re much better than other African countries who have bigger economies already and also experiencing high growth. The economy is growing and will continue to do so, but to say it’s better than other African countries is adding to the myth that it’s an economic powerhouse.

as a Rwandan i think we don't have the best economy in africa but i surely think we shall get there in a few years! it's not about what we have its about what we can do and our economy right now is booming higher every second

Someone somewhere within the government of Rwanda agrees 110% with this report card. Rwanda's times of economic booms are progressively slowing down. Instead of denying this fact, Rwandans should ask, "what should be done to navigate its economic depression?"

Seriously Rwanda economic miracle? May be less foreign aid received and less ability to steal mineral with its neighbour.
