The possums like
“This is the first time anything has actually been scared of me and attempted to flee, I’m not quite sure what to do”

Dog: "What are you?"

Possum: "I am anxious."

Possums are incredibly useful, an adult possum eats about 5, 000 ticks per season, and they're highly unlikely to contract rabies due to their body temperature. They also eat cockroaches and keep very clean. Possums are good. :)

They walk like horses, moving all their legs in sequence, not like cats or dogs. Amazing.

I've never seen one at full gallop like that. In his world, I'm sure he going warp 9.

I have a little opposum at home. I love hearing his little pitter patter feet as he's running around. He's most active from 4am till about 10am

The dog owner should know better. This is not a nice thing to do to the opossum. And the dog doesn't look too happy either. They are afraid of each other and should therefore be kept apart.

I used to have a pet possum when I was younger found him in my grandma basement took him home and fed him cat food and he grew pretty big, so my dad had me released him back into the woods , he seem sad when we drove off , but my dad told me he need room to roam around not cooped up in a crate, crazy thing is I still think about him now then, and this was 35 yrs ago, they’re pretty cool creatures

Very rare to see an opossum behave like this but I've witnessed something like it in the country. I heard one chasing another, growling with every trot through the woods, probably only about 40' distant. I also witnessed a large male attack and kill a young male that was in a dog house near my porch, might have been a male-to-male thing but so upsetting to see. They get along well with cats, have had ones as guests who eat side-by-side with the cats. I've been watching them since about 1988 and have raised a few batches of orphaned ones. They are not fighters and will lose to the quicker dog every time. Fella in the video would have done better to pick up the dog.

People really don't deserve pets sometimes, most people don't deserve the internet.

It's very uncommon to see a possum act aggressive like that, normally they freeze, play dead, or just keep their distance.

Opossums are not normally that aggressive (except with other possums).

I think that the similarity in size between the dog and opossum, as well as the dog's inquisitive behavior triggered the possum's territorial instincts. The opossum is a solitary animal. I have seen similar behavior in encounters between female opossums.

Opossums are amazing animals. I had the pleasure of rescuing a very small infant Opossum. It was the sweetest creature I have ever known. When I found her she was covered in fleas (which can kill a infant opposum) and very dehydrated. Once she was recovered and feeling better, we really bonded. She would slobber my arm or my neck and then rub her face on wherever she had slobbered. Marking me with her scent. It is called "slubbing" slobbering/rubbing. She smelled like fritos. She had a tiny lil pouch. She would sleep with me. I would put a hoodie on backwards and she would sleep in the hood on my chest. My Pomeranian loved her too. They would lay together and wrestle a bit and my pup would even lick her. I had named her Ellie. I didn't know that it was illegal to have them as pets (in my state), so when someone finally told me I was already so attached to her, but turned her over to a man that is liscensed. It was so difficult.. I cried for probably a good month. She was too tame to ever be in the wild, so they use her as a mascot for their rescue foundation. They will take her to the park on certain dates so that people can pet her and so they can be told how valuable and amazing these creatures are. She really touched my heart.

I did end up rescuing another baby, a male about the same age, but turned him over about a week after finding him and getting him back on his lil paws with the special diet. You have to do a lot of research before trying to care for one because their diet is VERY important to follow or they can develop MBD (metabolic bone disorder) same disease bearded dragons can get, where their bones get soft and will deform their arms legs and face. So please if you find one, do not try to feed them catfood or hotdogs and think they will be fine. They need someone educated in caring for Opossums to feed them the correct diet.

They have very short life spans. On average 6 months to a year in the wild. And up to about 3 maybe 4 if lucky in captivity. So please let them be. They don't dig holes, ⛔THEY DO NOT CARRY RABIES⛔ (their blood runs too cool) and they eat so many bugs and ticks. They are more afraid of you than you are of them.

Miss you Ellie ❤❤❤

I hand feed the ones that come to my back room window, they can be tamed in a couple days.

That possum is like "I WILL bite your butt!" It's pretty cruel for them to not pick the dog up or get him away from the possum though!😨

Most people aren't aware, but opossums CAN and DO know how to play. I've handled them for almost 34 years.

Possums don't carry rabies or any other diseases. The dog and possum here were just curious of one another and only sniffed and ran after each other. If there was something really wrong with this possum, he may have acted differently. No one was bitten or hurt here. It was just a cute little banter of different species.
